What to expect when you arrive — according to Nevada DMV standards

Check-In at the Counter

When you arrive, a staff member will greet you and collect your vehicle information — year, make, model, license plate, and VIN. You’ll also provide proof of registration or renewal notice. No appointment needed.

Vehicle Inspection Begins

Our certified smog technician performs a visual inspection first — checking that emissions components (catalytic converter, gas cap, EGR valve, air injection system) are present and unmodified. Tampering or removal of any emissions device is an automatic failure.

The Test is Performed

For 1996+ vehicles, the technician connects a scanner to your OBD-II port (usually under the dashboard). For older vehicles, a tailpipe probe measures exhaust gases directly. The technician runs the test per Nevada DMV-approved procedures and is not permitted to alter or skip any step.

Results Are Submitted Electronically

Pass or fail, results are transmitted directly to the Nevada DMV in real time. You receive a printed certificate. A passing test is valid for 90 days. The technician cannot change, falsify, or hold results — all data goes straight to the state.

If You Fail

The technician will provide a printout explaining why your vehicle failed. You are not required to repair at our location. You may take your vehicle to any shop. Once repaired, a retest is required. Ask about our retest policy at the counter.

Waivers & Hardship

If repair costs are excessive, you may qualify for a Nevada DMV Waiver. You must have spent a minimum amount on repairs (set by the state) and still not pass. Ask our staff for the waiver form and the list of authorized stations that can process it.

What Causes an OBD-II Failure?

For 1996 & newer vehicles — the most common smog test in Clark County

Check Engine Light Is On

A steady or flashing “Check Engine” or “Service Engine Soon” light is an automatic failure in Nevada. The light means your vehicle’s computer has detected an emissions-related problem and stored a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC). Even if the car seems to run fine, it will not pass.

💡 Tip: Get the code read before coming in. Many auto parts stores do this for free.

Monitors Not Ready (“Rejected”)

After a battery disconnect or ECU reset, your vehicle’s OBD system needs time to run its self-checks (called “monitors”). If they haven’t completed, the test returns a “Rejected — Not Ready” result. This is NOT the same as a failure — but you still can’t register until it’s resolved.

💡 Tip: Drive your vehicle normally for 5–7 days after a battery change before coming in for a test.

Vehicle Emitting Visible Smoke

Any vehicle emitting visible smoke from the exhaust will fail and does not qualify for a waiver. Blue smoke indicates burning oil; black smoke indicates rich fuel mixture; white smoke may indicate coolant leak. All must be repaired before retesting.

💡 Tip: Have a mechanic diagnose smoke issues before booking your smog test.

Emissions Device Tampering

Removal or modification of any factory emissions component — catalytic converter, EGR valve, oxygen sensor, PCV system, or air injection — is an automatic failure. Tampered vehicles also do not qualify for a waiver.

⚠️ There are NO waivers for catalytic converter removal or tampering. No exceptions.

💡 Tip: Aftermarket exhausts and intakes must retain all emissions components to pass.

Battery Recently Disconnected

Testing too soon after disconnecting the battery — even if the check engine light is off — can result in a rejected test because the OBD monitors haven’t completed. The vehicle should be driven under varied conditions (city and highway) for up to one week before testing.

💡 Tip: If you just replaced your battery, wait a week and drive before your smog test.

Loose or Missing Gas Cap

The EVAP (evaporative emissions) system is monitored by the OBD computer. A loose, cracked, or missing gas cap can trigger a Check Engine light and cause a failure. It’s one of the simplest and most overlooked fixes.

💡 Tip: Tighten or replace your gas cap and clear the code. The light should go off within a day or two of driving.

What Causes a Tailpipe Test Failure?

For pre-1996 vehicles — physical exhaust gas measurement

Older vehicles (pre-1996) go through a tailpipe emissions test where a probe is inserted into the exhaust and measures three gases: HC (hydrocarbons), CO (carbon monoxide), and NOx (nitrogen oxides). Your vehicle must fall below Nevada’s set limits at both idle and 2,500 RPM.

HC

Hydrocarbons

Unburned fuel escaping through the exhaust. High HC means incomplete combustion — usually caused by a misfiring spark plug, worn ignition wires, a bad oxygen sensor, or a clogged fuel injector.

Common fix: Tune-up, new spark plugs & wires, O2 sensor replacement
CO

Carbon Monoxide

Produced by incomplete combustion when the fuel mixture is too rich (too much fuel, not enough air). Common causes: dirty air filter, faulty MAF sensor, leaking fuel injector, or a failing catalytic converter.

Common fix: Replace air filter, clean or replace MAF sensor, inspect catalytic converter
NOx

Nitrogen Oxides

Formed when combustion temperatures are too high. Causes include a failing EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) valve, overheating engine, or lean fuel mixture. High NOx is the hardest to fix and the most harmful to air quality.

Common fix: EGR valve cleaning or replacement, cooling system check
